That’s why leadership must begin with respect, trust, and empathy—values that build lasting performance rather than fear-based compliance.

Power-Tripping Practices Brokers Should Avoid

Even in real estate, subtle forms of “power-tripping” can creep in—often disguised as “mentorship” or “discipline.” Here are examples we must consciously avoid:

  • Public humiliation as correction – Correcting mistakes in front of peers or clients erodes confidence instead of building competence.
  • Unpaid tasks disguised as “training” – Assigning errands or admin work unrelated to real estate practice disrespects a salesperson’s professional role.
  • Favoritism in leads and listings – Manipulating assignments to reward loyalty instead of merit creates toxic competition.
  • Unrealistic quotas without support – Expecting output without mentorship or tools is not leadership—it’s abdication of responsibility.
  • Mocking new agents’ mistakes – Everyone starts somewhere; what you laugh at today may discourage tomorrow’s top performer.

Leadership isn’t about testing who’s tough enough to stay. It’s about helping each one grow enough to succeed.
